Salmon: The Powerhouse Food

It’s likely you’ve heard how good salmon is for you. It’s filled with omega-3 fatty acids, lean protein, vitamins, and minerals. The long-chain fatty acids in salmon have been shown to reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure, and decrease the risk of chronic disease.

Salmon is also a fish cooked around the world in centinatrian communities. These centenarian communities have the highest concentrated average amount of people living over 100 years old in the world. And you guessed it, salmon is a key protein these people enjoy!

Salmon is also usually enjoyed by kids for its soft texture, light flavor, and fun color. So with all this said, salmon is a great addition to your weeknight dinner schedule. And this recipe will ensure everyone will enjoy it!

How it’s Made

This meal is extremely easy to make! To start, simply drizzle some olive oil down in a 9x9 inch baking dish. Add your salmon filets, skin side down. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Then, simply brush on your favorite BBQ sauce until everything is coated— make sure not to miss the sides! We will place this in the oven at 400 degrees F to cook for 20 minutes.

After it’s done cooking, test the internal temperature (should be 145 degrees F) or cut in the thickest part to make sure it’s flaky and fully cooked. Then, you’ll garnish the salmon with green onion, serve, and enjoy!

What to Serve it With

I love serving my BBQ salmon with a baked potato & roasted broccoli. Other ideas: rice pilaf, side salad with vinaigrette, orzo salad, roasted asparagus, etc!

Health Benefits:

  1. Full of Omega-3 fatty acids which reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure, and reduce the risk of chronic disease.

  2. Full of antioxidants which rid your body of free radicals

  3. High in iodine, calcium, copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, B vitamins, Vitamin A, and Vitamin D

  4. Good for your brain and nervous system

20 Minute Baked BBQ Salmon

Time: 30 minutes | Serves: 4 servings

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

  • 3-4 wild caught salmon filets

  • Salt and pepper

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/2 cup low sugar BBQ sauce (I get the Organic Kansas Style BBQ sauce from Trader Joe’s!)

  • 3 tablespoons green onion, diced (this really adds flavor and I highly recommend!)

Directions:

  1. First, preheat your oven to 400 degrees F. Drizzle an oven proof baking dish with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Depending on how large your filets are, you may need a larger baking dish.

  2. Add your salmon filets skin side down to the dish. Spread the salmon around in the olive oil so the skin is lightly coated. Season the salmon generously with salt, pepper, and the garlic powder. Next, using a pastry brush, brush the BBQ sauce onto the salmon filets. Make sure the sides and top are well coated.

  3. Place in the oven to bake for 20 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 145 and the inside is flaky. (20 minutes is usually always perfect for my oven!)

  4. Once the salmon is done cooking, garnish with green onions and ENJOY!

Side suggestions: I suggest serving this salmon with a side salad, baked potato, roasted broccoli rice pilaf, orzo salad, or roasted asparagus.
